Questions And Answers About Fatty Liver

Since we started this Web site, we have received quite a few questions from people about natural fatty liver reversal.

We are glad to share everything we know and what has worked for our community.

However, be aware that we are not medical doctors, and we cannot give you medical advice or diagnose your disease or condition. Please read the disclaimer at the bottom of the page if you have any questions.

We encourage you to establish a strong working relationship with your doctor or health care practitioner.

They may not have all the answers, but they are the ones who order the tests, analyze your symptoms, and diagnose your condition. In other words, you want them on your team.

Below are answers to the most common questions we get. If you don’t see your question, feel free to ask it below and we’ll add it to the list the next time we update the site…

Question: I was diagnosed with fatty liver, is it really possible to reverse it?

Answer: The liver is the only organ that’s able to regenerate itself, and naturally undo past damage, even after years of abuse. That means approximately 80% of all people with simple fatty liver can reverse their condition, and significantly reduce their symptoms by making only a few dietary and lifestyle changes.

The secret to dissolving existing liver-fat is through a specific regimen of foods, liquids, and in certain cases supplements (depending on the extent of the problem). Once liver functionality returns to it’s normal state, symptoms generally start to dissipate and your body begins to naturally heal itself.

Question: How do I know if I’m part of the 80% that can reverse it?

Answer: If you were diagnosed with simple Fatty Liver (otherwise known as NAFLD or Grade 1 Fatty Liver), there’s a good chance you can completely reverse your condition. Grade 1 is where excess fat builds up within your liver cells, usually around 5% by weight.

It’s generally considered reversible, and you may have mild (or even no) symptoms. Simple fatty liver is the most common diagnosis, about 8 out of 10 cases, and is often discovered after you have a blood test and your liver enzymes are elevated.

Question: What about more severe forms of fatty liver?

Answer: Approximately 10% of all fatty liver cases progress to what’s known as Grade 2. This is a condition known as NASH (Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis). That means there is already some scarring of your liver. The good news is that NASH is often reversible as well, but because of the scarring, your liver may never return to 100% functionality. That means you need to be very careful about what you eat, drink, and any toxins you are exposed to.

If you have any kind of fatty liver, you should give up alcohol and smoking completely, and limit your intake of sugar, processed foods, dairy, and saturated fats. But if you have NASH, those steps are not optional, they are mandatory.

If you continue dangerous lifestyle habits, your fatty liver can progress to Grade 3 (cirrhosis, fibrosis, pre-cancer), or even Grade 4 (liver failure).

You definitely want to avoid that since it means you probably need a liver transplant, not to mention you risk death.

Question: How long does it usually take to reverse fatty liver?

Answer: NAFLD and NASH are often caused by years of poor diet and living in a toxic, stress-filled environment. Obviously you aren’t going to reverse your damage in a few short weeks or even months. But once you realize all the ways you are poisoning and harming your liver, and learn how to start eating a liver-friendly diet, you will probably see a noticeable reduction in symptoms.

Many people feel better after a week or two by simply giving up sugar and alcohol. Of course, some need longer based on how damaged their liver is. If you are at Grade 1, it could take a few months to get back to normal, but if you are at Grade 2 or 3, it could take over a year.

The real question is, how motivated are you to end the pain and suffering caused by your fatty liver? How much longer are you willing to struggle with this? And how soon do you want to start living a healthy, happy life?

The sooner you realize that you and you alone are the captain of your own ship, the sooner you can start to take the concrete steps needed to restore your good health.

Question: What happens if I just ignore my fatty liver? Will it go away on it’s own?

Answer: Fatty liver is not something you want to ignore or leave till later. Unless you start taking concrete steps, it will only get worse. If left unchecked, it can lead to cirrhosis, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, cancer, liver failure, and ultimately death.

As soon as you know there’s a problem, you want to minimize the damage by eating specific foods that support the liver and avoiding the foods that kill it. You also want to protect yourself from chemicals, solvents, pesticides, and other environmental toxins.

Finally, you need to find a way to deal with your excess stress. Consider starting an exercise program, yoga or meditation practice, or just begin walking 30 minutes a day. It’s quick and easy, and you’ll feel great afterwards (and it gets your pulse moving).

Question: Is there a connection between liver health and weight loss?

Answer: The link between liver health and body fat is well established. A fatty liver cannot properly digest food or regulate blood-sugar, and it throws your hormonal system out of whack. That means you’ll feel tired and listless, and have trouble burning calories. This manifests itself as extra weight and cellulite, especially in the belly, thighs, and love handles.

When you get your liver healthy, the first thing you will notice is that your body’s natural fat-burning ability will reactivate, and weight will seem to fall off on it’s own. We see that happen in case after case, when liver fat and hormone levels return to normal, so does body weight.

Question: Can you tell me about your program? What’s it all about?

Answer: The program is called Reverse Your Fatty Liver, and it reveals the exact diet and detox program I used to reverse my own fatty liver and heal my body. I was able to eliminate my condition, get my life back, and even lose 31 lbs. of fat following this plan, and there’s a good chance you’ll experience similar results.

  1. How can I find out how much excess fat is within my liver cells to determine which grade of Fatty liver I have?
If it is the ALT and AST tests what range of number correlate to the grade of Fatty Liver?

    1. Hi April,

Enzyme levels differ from person to person, and there’s not necessarily a correlation between ALT, AST, and fat infiltration. The only way to know is to get a Fibroscan or to be 100% accurate, a biopsy.

I would see a hepatologist or GI doctor, and possibly a naturopath or Chinese Medicine doctor. If you know you have fatty liver, don’t stress over the exact percentage. Just start taking care of yourself, and stop doing the things that harm your liver, like drinking alcohol, eating sugar, or exposing yourself to toxins.
